What is the best food to feed a puffer fish?

I just purchased a Valentini Puffer two days ago and have yet to see him eat. I fed him some brine shrimp and some flakes – the other fish love them – but my puffer still isn’t eating. What is the best food to give them?

Try freshly chopped bits of fresh prawns meat. I had a pair more than 8 years ago.. and they had a similar problem. But once they know its food,.. they just gulp it down. I think it is important that you try something that is closer to their natural foods, rather than dried/processed food. Just be careful because once they start eating, you really dont understand how much they have eaten, as they gulp the chunks down,.. so be careful that you dont end up overfeeding..

I used to have a pair of dwarf puffers and they were very picky as well. If you were trying to feed them dried brine shrimp, try again with frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms. They may only eat live artemia or bloodworms, or sometimes small snails.
Your best bet is probably to call the store where you purchased them and ask them what and how often the puffers ate there.

It isn’t uncommon for puffers not to eat for the first day or two in the tank. They are getting their surroundings down.

I really hate to be the one to tell you this but your puffer probably will only eat live fish. Forget the flake food. I have yet to have or see a puffer that will eat flake food…pellets are a push. Mine did the same thing when I brought them home. (dogface and porks).

None of which would eat anything but live fish. You have to realize these fish are mostly caught wild. They aren’t use to seeing pellet or flake food swimming around. Puffers are agressive and prefer their food to be moving.

If you have a power head in your tank, try a little at a time, putting frozen brine shrimp in front of it. This way it will look like it is moving and more appatizing for your fish. If they still will not eat after 4 days, go get some feeder comets, I would stay away from the guppies, since they are way too small. Black mollies are great, especially if you get two females and one male. That way your puffer will have live food as the mollies multiply. (Yes black mollies can live happily in your salt water. Just float them 15 minutes longer before dumping them in to the tank. Also, begin adding salt water immediately when you float.
